A1 Grand Prix in
Durban 24-25 February 2007
German driver Nico Hülkenberg stole the show with an overwhelming victory in the sprint
and a 10-second win in the feature race to take maximum points.
This was the eighth consecutive win for Team Germany in this season's A1 series and makes
Hülkenberg the best A1 driver since the inception of the competition.
The SA team salvaged some pride after returning late in the main race to achieve the
fastest lap.
The feature race was preceded by a colourful opening ceremony which included Zulu dancers,
drum majorettes, bicycle tricksters, roller skaters and kart drivers.
The parade was led by a motorcycle parade and an uShaka Marine World float with sea animal
mascots.
Organisers also used the race as an opportunity to showcase Durban's culture and unique
attractions like the colourful rikshas which brought the drivers on to the track in true
Durban style.
The ceremony had the crowd hyped up for the main race which was eventful, with high-speed
crashes and technical breakdowns.
