VODACOM JOURNALIST OF THE YEAR
AWARDS 2003
RADIO KHWEZI TAKES TWO
In the RADIO NEWS category, Tusokwake Braveman Mhlaba, of Radio Khwezi Community Radio, in
Kwa-Zulu Natal won the award for his story on the war in Iraq.
The judges said that deadlines on radio often favour a journalist to run with the freshest
angle and the most powerful sound bite - sometimes omitting issues of balance and
background information that are key ingredients to any story. "As such it is rare for
a journalist to take a breaking story and despite the constraints of an under resourced
newsroom make sure the story has balance, analysis, and is at the same time bursting with
information and sound that takes the listener to the scene."
Braveman won for "showing a passion, commitment and dedication for good story telling
and standing head and shoulders above the best in this category".

Tusokwake Braveman Mhlaba
The RADIO FEATURE award went to Mabutho Michael Ngcobo from Radio Khwezi Community Radio
in Kwa-Zulu Natal for a program that re-enacted the Anglo-Zulu War fought 124 years ago.
The judges said the winner took the listeners to the very spot of the event and made it
sound as if the story had just happened.
The judges noted that a good radio news feature must appeal to the ear. The writing must
be simple yet creative and the information relevant. "Most important of all is that
the writer understands the subject and has taken the time to research the issue - making
sure the listener has only the very best information on the story".
