Radio Khwezi celebrates Youth Day 8-13 June 2003
From 8 June to 13 June 2003 an Abstinence Walk took
place in the northern part of KwaZulu Natal. 20 walkers walked from Durban to Empangeni.
The event was organised by the Durban Christian Centre working together with True Love
Waits with the aim of promoting abstinence before marriage. Different members of this
organisation took part in the walk on a daily basis.
Radio Khwezi sponsored the walk by giving coverage of
the event from the beginning to end. Some of Khwezi's volunteers took part in the walk and
did some live reporting for the news and Ezabasha (youth programme).
Hundreds of people accompanied the walkers. These
included community members and well known personalities such as Councillor Obed Mlaba
(Durban Unicity Mayor), Dr Zweli Mkhize (KZN Health Minister), Mr Ntuli (Ndondakusuka
Municipality Mayor), Cll Simo Mfayela (ILember District Municipality Mayor), Linda Sibiya
(UKhozi Radio DJ), Irvin Sihlophe and others from Radio Khwezi, Ishmael Maluleke(Sundowns
F.C.) and others.
In 2002 the Durban Christian Centre initiated the campaign as an
outreach to promote abstinence before marriage. The 2002 Abstinence Walk was from Port
Shepstone via Durban to Pietermaritzburg.
