With the high unemployment rate in South
Africa, the Bake for Profit project is meeting one of the deepest needs in communities
throughout the country: the right to earn a living. The Bake for Profit course was
developed by Luiza Rigutto 1996 in Cape Town where the first training course took place. A
variety of basic baking skills are taught during the 12 week course. All recipes taught
have proven over the years to equip the entrepreneur with marketable and affordable
products to sell in their respective communities.

Story
My name is Hlengiwe Memela and the name
of my business is Hlengiwe Community Bakery. Since doing the course last year my life has
changed and I am now able to feed my four kids and educate them. Before I did the course I
was at home with my family, now I have bought my own 4-room house, with the money I have
earned by baking and selling. I have been able to buy myself a second hand stove, a fridge
and a cupboard in which to keep my ingredients. I have a bank account where I deposit R900
every week, and I pay R400 a month for my house loan.
