Khwezi visits a community radio
station in Mozambique
During a 3 and a half week trip through approximately 5 countries two of radio Khwezi's
presenters, Mr. Thomas Maphanga (from the Zulu department) and Johan Claassen (Afrikaans
department) visited a community radio station in Mozambique. The "Cuamba Community
Radio Station" is situated in the Nyassa province in the middle of Mozambique,
in the town and district called Cuamba.
It was a surprise to the two presenters when they recognised some of the equipment
produced in South Africa. Even technology used is advanced and does not depict what the
rest of the country looks like at all. Outside of the station walls, the country is still
recovering from the past civil wars between Renamo and Frelimo, with tanks and broken down
military vehicles rusting away next to the roads etc.
It was also not easy taking pictures of the station because of the imprinted mentality
that photographers are spies! Eventually the meeting with the presenters became more
relaxed and we managed to take these few photos.
The woman is the station manager, the guy at the transmitter box is the
technician, and the group photo was with the presenter.
