More than 500 people attended the ceremony of Maphumulo Municipality Launch on Saturday, 8 June 2002 at the Church Centre Hall at UMphumulo. Among them were the members of the community and dignitaries from all over KwaZulu Natal.

The mayor of Maphumulo, Mr B.P.Ngcobo, Deputy Mayor, Mr E.V. Mhlongo and Maphumulo councillors were sworn in to their positions.
The mayor of Ilembe district, Mr M. Mfayela, Maphumulo Municipality Manager, Mr M.V.Mhlongo, Ndabezitha T.T.K. Ngubane and others were among those who attended the ceremony.

The guest speaker was Inkosi Nyanga Ngubane, the Ministor of Local Government in KwaZulu Natal. Mr Ngubane asked the councillors and mayors to serve the community if they want to be re-elected for the same positions next time. He also condemned the killing of police officers in KwaZulu Natal.
