String Quartet
The Wartburg-Kirchdorf School hosted the KZN String Quartet on the 2
June 2002 in an effort to raise funds.
Four members of the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra, incidentally all
Bulgarians, entertained an audience of 150 for the afternoon. German coffee and cake was
served in between items of music from an outstanding classical repetoire.
The String Quartet performs at weddings, business meetings, home
concerts and functions. The first violinist and leader of the String Quartet, Hristo Kardjiev, was born in
Bulgaria, studied there and in Germany, and became and held the position of Concert master
of the Bulgarian National Orchestra in Sofia for about 15 years. There he had an extensive
solo and teaching career and singly and with other different groups and orchestras he
travelled to many countries around the world.
In 1990 he immigrated to South Africa and is the Concert master of
the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra. He also performs as a soloist with other chamber
formations.
