Radio Khwezi was invited by the German Embassy to attend the award ceremony of Mrs Gerlind
Lyttle at which she received the German Order of Merit. This award is presented to any
person who has in an extraordinary way contributed to the upliftment and furtherance of
the German language and culture or has been of special assistance to the German
people in their community. Mrs Lyttle emigrated to South Africa from Germany about 28
years ago and has been working at the University of Natal in Pietermaritzburg for 24
years. Here, according to the German Ambassador, Mrs Peters, she promoted the German
language "in a way that went much further than mere teaching. She helped to build
bridges between people and between cultures." She took part in seeing to it that
German still plays an important part in University and school curriculums.

The award ceremony was held at the Royal Hotel in Durban and was attended by the German
ambassador, Mrs Anna Margaretha Peters, the Deputy Vice-Chancellors, members of the
academic community, the Minister from Lower Saxony (Niedersachsen), members of the
managing board of the Alumni association, Hans Beier, the German Honorary Consul in Durban
and members of the Deutsche Kulturverein. Mrs Peters made a speech in which she praised
Mrs Lyttle for her efforts in promoting German in Kwazulu Natal and in which she described
some of her achievements. Mrs Lyttle responded by thanking all parties who assisted her
throughout the years and expressed the desire to share the award with all.
