Midmar Mile - The world´s biggest open-water swimming event
Paul and Robin Bees,
winners of the family section
On Saturday 9 and
Sunday 10 of February 2002 15 500 swimmers took to the water at Midmar Dam for the 29th
annual Midmar Mile. The weather was great and so was the competition, with close finishes
in both the main men and women events. It was unfortunate that Ryk Neethling could not
defend his title as he had problems getting a visa to come. Diana Hegedus, last
year´s winner of the women 14 to 30 years race, was back to defend her title. She managed
to slip into the first position right at the end. The winner of the mens event was
the Olympic silver medallist Terence Parkin. There were also events for the family as well
as for friends and companies. The oldest swimmer of the day was a lady of 80 years and the
youngest a boy of just 5 years. Next year´s event will be held on the 8th and the 9th
February 2003. We look forward to seeing all our listeners there!
