Unique performance of Handel´s MessiahRadio Khwezi
recorded the performance of Handel´s Messiah at the Kwasizabantu Mission on 8 December
2001. It was a unique experience with over 6000 young people attending the performance.
For many it was a first time experience. The audience showed their appreciation by giving
a standing ovation after the final "Amen".
The performance, under the direction of Lutz Kohrs, was given by the
Natal Bach Choir, Pietermaritzburg Amateur Music Society and its Augmented orchestra. The
soloists for the event were Linelle Wimbles(soprano), Margi Nel(alto), Nicholas
Nikolaidis(tenor) and John Butler(bass).
The uniqueness of the performance was enhanced by the presence of
the Premier of Kwazulu Natal, Mr Lionel Mtshali, who praised and recommended the
performance. The German ambassador to South Africa, Mrs A. Peters, was also present and
commended the performance of Handel´s Messiah in a culturally
self-confident Kwazulu Natal. Other dignitaries present were Mr C. Ngiba(Member of
Parliament, Kwazulu Natal); Mr P. Ngubane(Mayor of the Umvoti District) and Dr Meinhard
Uken(Deutscher Kulturrat/German Cultural Association).
