                   Unique performance of Handel´s Messiah

Radio Khwezi recorded the performance of Handel´s Messiah at the Kwasizabantu Mission on 8 December 2001. It was a unique experience with over 6000 young people attending the performance. For many it was a first time experience. The audience showed their appreciation by giving a standing ovation after the final "Amen".

The performance, under the direction of Lutz Kohrs, was given by the Natal Bach Choir, Pietermaritzburg Amateur Music Society and its Augmented orchestra. The soloists for the event were Linelle Wimbles(soprano), Margi Nel(alto), Nicholas Nikolaidis(tenor) and John Butler(bass).

The uniqueness of the performance was enhanced by the presence of the Premier of Kwazulu Natal, Mr Lionel Mtshali, who praised and recommended the performance. The German ambassador to South Africa, Mrs A. Peters, was also present and commended the performance of Handel´s Messiah in a culturally self-confident Kwazulu Natal. Other dignitaries present were Mr C. Ngiba(Member of Parliament, Kwazulu Natal); Mr P. Ngubane(Mayor of the Umvoti District) and Dr Meinhard Uken(Deutscher Kulturrat/German Cultural Association).
