Khwezi wins top Sport Award in KZN

Premierīs Sport Award
Lightning never strikes
twice in the same place, so goes the English saying. It looks like this cannot be
said of Radio Khwezi. Last year our sports reporter, Jeffrey Zikhali, won the Telkom
Journalist of the Year Award in the community radio category presented in Johannesburg. On
Wednesday, 13 June 2001, Jeffrey received a
silver medal for his sports media coverage from the Premier of KZN, Mr Lionel Mtshali, at
the KwaZulu Natal Premierīs Sports Awards at the ICC in Durban.
With only five media representatives in the category
chosen this year, it is clear that Radio Khwezi is already competing at provincial level
in spite of being a community radio station.
Since 1995 Jeffrey has devoted much time and energy to presenting sports news to thousands
of rural homes in KwaZulu Natal and is,
therefore, a worthy recipient of this coveted award. He is rewarded for
well-documented, well-researched and clear representation of daily sports updates on Radio
Khwezi.
"I was already preparing to drive back home to Kranskop when,
out of the blue, I heard Radio Khwezi being mentioned from the stage," said the
outspoken Jeffrey. "Having attended the same function for the last two years, I
wondered what Khwezi must still do in order to
be recognised in this province in reporting on sport. We have always been very fast,
accurate and efficient in bringing the most up-to-date results to our sports fans,"
said Jeffrey.
