The
transformation of radio is the most exciting media development in South Africa since the
launch of television in 1976. Just five years ago in South Africa radio listeners could
select only from a handful of stations. Today there are approx. 123 broadcasters including
83 community radio stations.
KZN (KwaZulu-Natal) probably has the greatest economic growth potential of all the
provinces of South Africa. By language the region is made up of 77% Zulus, 18%
English, 2% Afrikaans and 2% spoken by other languages.
It is known that 60% of South Africans cannot read newspapers they are either too
young or illiterate.
No other media apart from radio can claim to effectively penetrate the heartland of KZN in
a meaningful way. |
