Inkanyezi Yokusa, popularly known as Radio Khwezi (or in English as the
"Morning Star") began beaming out its 10 kW transmission power across KwaZulu
Natal at 5:45 am on Tuesday, 2 September 1995. First, however, came the astronomical
three-month task of building, equipment and talent mobilisation. A true community station,
approximately 150 volunteers climbed in to push knobs, wind wheels, categorise CDs
and make programmes in Radio Khwezis four languages: Zulu, English, German, and
Afrikaans.
Together these people shared the excitement of watching a tiny, unskilfully-slow, two
recording room studio expand into an efficient system with broadcasting room, library,
working room, news and administrative offices and three recording rooms spitting out
programmes to meet each days demands.
